NRA Personal Protection in the Home

It's 3 AM and you are awakened to the sound of glass breaking and footsteps in your house! What do you do?

Lock your bedroom door? Sneak down the hall and get your kids? Call the police? Get your gun? If you call the police, what do you tell them? Should you confront the intruder(s)?

3 AM is the wrong time to first think about this situation. The Personal Protection in the Home class discusses safety issues, awareness, and legal ramifications of having to defend yourself in your home.

In addition to shooting, this class covers self defense principles including increased personal awareness, defensive mindset, legal issues, quick decision-making, and planning to avoid, prevent, and survive a violent confrontation.

The Personal Protection in the Home course is designed for using a pistol defensively.

Cost: $100

Curriculum:

  • Introduction to Defensive Shooting
  • Basic Defensive Handgun Skills including:
    • Flash Sight Picture
    • Shooting Positions including:
      • Weaver
      • Isosceles
      • Kneeling
      • 1-handed
    • Using Cover and Concealment
    • Engaging Multiple Targets
  • Firearms and the Law: Possession, Ownership, & the Use of Deadly Force
  • Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation
  • Selecting a Handgun for Personal Defense
  • Sport Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities
  • Course Review and Examination

You will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook and instruction on defensive pistol shooting, self-defense issues, and strategies to protect your home and family.

Duration:

8 hours minimum,10 is more realistic

Prerequisites:

This class is not for beginning shooters. Proof of previous training is required, whether it be through demonstrating proficiency to the instructor or presenting a course completion certificate from prior training class.

The course is both physically and mentally demanding.

What to Bring:

  • Your working handgun in a typical defensive caliber:
    • .380
    • 9mm
    • .38 Special
    • .357 Magnum (it is preferred that you use .38 Special ammunition)
    • .357 Sig
    • .40 S&W
    • .45 GAP
    • .45 ACP
    • Exceptions can be made with instructor permission
  • Minimum of 100 rounds of FACTORY ammunition for your gun, 150 is better
  • Lunch
  • Note taking materials
  • Knee pads

Course Completion:

To earn the course completion certificate, you must pass a written exam on the lecture material and shoot adequately.

NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home

Cost: $125

Curriculum:

  • Introduction to Concealed Carry Safety and Defensive Mindset
  • Introduction to Self-Defense and Concealed Carry
  • Legal Aspects of Concealed Carry and Self-Defense
  • Carry Modes and Concealment
  • Presenting a Handgun from Concealment
  • Presentation, Position, and Movement
  • Special Shooting Techniques
  • Sport Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities
  • Course Review and Examination

You will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home handbook and instruction on defensive pistol shooting, self-defense issues, and strategies to protect your home and family.

Duration:

14 hours minimum, 16-18 is more realistic

Prerequisites:

This class is not for beginning shooters. Proof of previous training is required, whether it be through demonstrating proficiency to the instructor or presenting a course completion certificate from prior training class. You must possess the gun handling and safety skills taught in the NRA Personal Protection in the Home class.

The course is both physically and mentally demanding.

What to Bring:

  • Your working handgun in a typical defensive caliber:
    • .380
    • 9mm
    • .38 Special
    • .357 Magnum (it is preferred that you use .38 Special ammunition)
    • .357 Sig
    • .40 S&W
    • .45 GAP
    • .45 ACP
    • Exceptions can be made with instructor permission
  • Minimum of 200 rounds of FACTORY ammunition for your gun, 300 is better
  • Lunch
  • Note taking materials
  • Knee pads

 

Course Completion:

To earn the course completion certificate, you must pass a written exam on the lecture material and shoot adequately.

 

The tools you chose could save your life! Choose wisely.

Have a plan and practice it. Make sure that everyone in your family knows what to do.

Be aware and prepare. Having the proper mindset can help you deal with the aftermath of a violent encounter.

What do you tell the intruder? In your command voice: "Leave now! I've called the police! I am armed and will defend myself!"

Use outside lighting and well trimmed landscaping to help deter intruders from hiding in your yard.
